75. this episode is like the body switch one. you want to defend both of them but it’s not like you can take both sides but I will say I’m on Magnus’s 70% and Alec has my 30%.

I don’t like saying anything negative about Alec but it makes him look extremely bad. everything they’ve been through, Magnus opening up, the fact that Magnus was going to tell Alec about the sword, it’s a huge betrayal. and besides the body switch episode, alec almost dying twice, this is probably the most they have been through. its going to be a real trial and challenge to get through. but as Magnus once stated, they will have challenges

but also can we just agree that this is so much better than the Malec breakup in the books????? I’ll take Alec lies to Magnus and has a hard time balancing for 1000 Alex instead of Alec tries to take Magnus’s immortality away please

thinking about the potential for some really good eddie-athena conversations if/when we get eddie's coming out arc. because eddie is someone with Multiple narrative parallels to bobby, but eddie-and-shannon draw comparisons to michael and athena. canonically we already have the allusion to comphet with eddie feeling unable to 'fix' his life and himself, placing responsibility on shannon (kim's version) to do so, which is reminiscent of michael's "i let you love me because i thought that you could fix me" in season 1.

but there's also a parallel made between shannon and athena as the wives who initiate the divorce, and i found athena's reasoning in s1 to be really compelling:

"i love you. you're my man, the father of my children, my best friend...us staying together like this - holding onto this house, holding onto some picture of what was, is making me hate you".

firstly, this was growth for athena, who admits in 1x02 that she was in some level of conscious denial about michael's sexuality because she wanted a life with him and didn't want to let it go, proposing a celibate marriage and continuing to wear her wedding ring across episodes.

that denial - that "holding onto some picture of what was" is echoed in eddie's idealised view of his marriage, except his is made more extreme by shannon's death. he holds onto memories of them in la, that same picture of her at the beach in 2x17, and strips away the context until he's looking at a marriage that could have lasted a lifetime.

but equally, when kim pulls her dress up stunt, what is most at the forefront of eddie's mind is shannon leaving intentionally . when she left for LA and, in his mind, her asking for a divorce. the two events are conflated for him, and then her death is added to that in the admission that she can never return. they're all blurred together - the letter eddie and chris read after her death being the same letter that was intended for chris after she had left.

and the thing is, eddie and shannon's marriage after that initial two year separation is marked with uncertainty (not mentioning their conflict). at the beginning of s2 eddie doesn't wear his wedding ring and describes shannon as not being in the picture, yet admits they're still married as a matter of technicality to carla when the school admissions require him to. shannon more or less asks her husband of almost a decade "what are we?" at the beginning of 2x17 to which eddie replies "i don't know". he asserts to buck that he and shannon are still married in 2x17, but questions whether they'd have to get married again, and it's played as a semi-genuine question. when eddie points out to shannon that they're (technically) still married at the dinner in 2x17, she says that they should get a divorce.

and then she dies.

chimney tells eddie to say goodbye to his wife. everyone refers to shannon as his late wife or dead wife. she is memorialised as shannon diaz. and maybe she would have wanted to keep that surname - i mean athena still goes by grant professionally - but the complete absence of a maiden name, of a sign of who she was before she was married, is significant to me. context stripped away again. only eddie and bobby know shannon asked for a divorce at all, so isn't it essentially like it never happened?

but it did happen, and it's the thing that eddie still needs closure from. he questions shannon (kim's version) about her leaving, asking "why".

there's no 'why' about her dying after a car accident. he was there, he's an EMT, he understands what happened. and while it seems like he's talking about shannon leaving the first time, he's contextualising that event with the divorce that came after.

because he knows why shannon left to go to LA. shannon tells him in 2x07 why she found it so hard to come back to chris, reiterates that she left out of love for chris and fears failing him in 2x17.

but shannon doesn't really explain the need for a divorce - for shedding the ambiguity they already have in their marriage and permanently detaching from eddie. that's solely about their romantic relationship: the fact that she perceived it as something that made her more likely to fail chris, more likely to fail eddie as a co-parent. eddie says "you left me" to kim, not 'us' - not him and chris - because asking for a divorce did not change shannon's intentions to be a mother to chris, but did signify her lack of intention to be a wife to eddie. with that context, shannon writing chris a letter (that she never sent, but whatever) after she leaves the first time but leaving eddie a note becomes this retroactive sign of her differing intentions towards the two of them - of her "not [loving eddie] enough" as eddie posits in the scene with kim.

but that's not the case. shannon says she didn't leave chris because she didn't love him but because she did and i believe that logic can be applied to eddie. at every point in their relationship we see shannon trying to connect with eddie, trying to communicate with him, telling him that he doesn't need to fulfil the roles or obligations he thinks he does. i don't know if she was in love with him in season 2, or ever, but she loved him.

"my man, the father of my children, my best friend."

kim may have been wearing shannon's appearance but she had no real clue what shannon had felt towards eddie. she couldn't provide eddie with real conversation, real answers to make sense of. and to an extent, nobody but shannon can give eddie those answers.

but i believe that athena grant would definitely have some worthwhile perspective, and that perspective is going to be a significant part of eddie making his peace with that relationship. of him being able to look back and find the answers in that 8 year relationship, and to let it go.

Talk Shop Tuesday: do you have a part (/few episodes) of the Morgan AU you're most looking forward to writing or sharing?

OH BOY DO I

One of them I can’t tell you about because you’ll immediately guess why I’m excited 😅 but I’ll tell you some of the rest (in chronological order

the end of s1!! I have a few twists I can’t wait to share…and the fallout of Eowells’s betrayal is gonna hurt BIG time. Those of you who have read the s2 arc know that it still lingers, but…you’ll get to feel that betrayal full-force :D with an added wrinkle you might not expect (or maybe you will, but I hope you enjoy it regardless!)

Morgan & Jesse becoming friends during s2! I call this their “unofficial roommates” phase—when Jesse runs away from STAR Labs, she decides to run as far away as possible and to someone she sorta knows already, whom Harry would never expect because Morgan and Jesse, at that point in time, don’t like each other! They become friends while they’re living together 💞 it’s a nice way to explore the issues of “you are the best and worst of me, amplified in ways that make me jealous and insecure at the same time” and how they work through it. And it’s marginally safer than Jesse squatting with a stranger in a strange world…especially with Morgan’s powers

2x17, the time travel episode 🥰 the addition of Morgan is gonna make for some very fun tweaks (and s1 Barry being jealous of how Morgan gravitates to s2 Barry…especially because 2x17 is is during 1x11 and Morgan still hasn’t admitted she’s forgiven him yet)

Morgan & Tina’s relationship is so super important…and in s2, it reaches…not a breaking point, but a turning point. Morgan has idolized Tina for so much of her childhood, but Tina wasn’t a perfect (god)mother. She wasn’t ready for it, and at first, she struggled with the balance. Much like Eowells…but Tina made an active effort to change and be better for Morgan, while Eowells didn’t. It’s why Morgan sees Eowells’s flaws more easily, but overlooks Tina (and it’s why she’s a bit too hard on Tina in s2…but they grow past it) 💞

In that vein, I’m so excited to write Morgan’s complicated relationship with her future stepfather, Henry. She likes him, she thinks he’s great, he clearly loves Tina, and she’s not worried that he’ll hurt her, and he’s Barry’s dad…but the idea of him being her stepfather is still a lot for her, considering her baggage around fatherhood. It’ll take some time to work through, even with his endless patience, and I’m so excited to write it!

THE SAVITAR ARC/SEASON listen so much of s3 is a giant question mark, because I’m still trying to figure out how much I want to change from canon…but Savitar? I’ve pretty much decided on his characterization…particularly his relationships with Morgan, Barry, and Iris (especially Morgan). And I can’t wait to write that 🥰

Morgan & Iris! post-s3, and also during the bad future in s5. Both are instances of them grieving Barry, and there are similarities and differences in how both of those unfold…but even when they argue, even when they walk away…there’s so much love there still. Even when one of them doubts it, it doesn’t change that 💞

The Westallen wedding!! I haven’t decided wtf I’m doing about s4’s Crisis, but in any case, Westallen will get their full ceremony (with no proposal at their rehearsal dinner, no sudden double weddings, etc). If their wedding is crashed, it’ll be during the reception, after the ceremony is all said and done. And there’s a brother-sister dance after the main couple’s dance—Iris with Wally, Barry with Morgan 🥰 (they even swap partners in the middle!). Wally even dances with Linda at the wedding 👀

CRISIS OFC this is gonna be the grand finale (possibly with one other mini storyline after it but…nothing about the Mirrorverse or s7-9), and I’m so excited 💞 no details I can share just yet, except that it’ll be a mishmash of what we got in canon and what was presented in 2024’s newspaper. And Thawne will ofc be prominent, as he should’ve been in canon

Next time on 9-1-1 2x15 'Oceans 9-1-1' the series first heist episode (yes there will be other heist episodes to come) 2x16 'Bobby Begins Again' we learn how Bobby came to the 118 (this also means it's Bobby's turn as the writers punching bag) 2x17 'Cearful What You Wish For' we continue the present day plot for Bobby while Eddie and Shannon figure out there marriage.

Chimney's awesome but I have to say Buck is my favorite.

Maddie is a badass and Doug is a bad memory.

They are an adorable couple.

Don't worry there's a much better man in Michael's future.

After the rollercoaster that was 2x16, I want to take a moment to talk about how I think the latter events of the episode will affect things going into 2x17, in particular with regards to the polaroid Carson took of Nancy. So, when Carson looks at the polaroid he notices the marks that have suddenly appeared on Nancy, I can only imagine the numerous possibilities that could be the reason for them, but because I had a wondering thought I really think because of this we’ll get Ace being reeled back into the picture in his own way now. Considering he also has his own polaroid of Nancy, I think we’ll possibly see him going to find it and see if its changed, plus in the promo photos for the episode we know that not only will Ace and Nancy be more involved due to the investigation, but by logical inference that Ace is going to take concern (as he has already but even more so now) with her wellbeing. In the photo below I’m pretty sure it’s most likely that Carson is going to show the polaroid to Nancy:

and logically this is part of her reaction:

or even if it’s not to do with the polaroid, clearly something is going to come up which is bad and has to do with Nancy, and you know our boy Ace is concerned here whatever it is. And of course the rest of the crew will be too, but I’m obviously biased.
